So, what else do I have in my locker? Well, at the moment, not a lot. But that’s not to say that other ideas are not there – here’s some that I’m currently toying with.
Mainstream: Destination Happiness
This was a project I undertook for the 2015 NaNoWriMo event in November. The work is absolutely not in the fantasy genre – it is set in 21st century Bristol – and indeed, this is my take on a love story. Not necessarily what I’d choose to read, but I actually enjoyed writing this. The main encouragement to write this book was to do something my wife could enjoy. She is not a particular fan of fantasy, so I feel a bit guilty asking her to read all my wares!
Contemporary Fantasy: Arthur’s Heir
I have always been fascinated by the Arthurian stories from the British Isles, and to write something in that realm would be an honour. But the traditional Arthurian stories have been done (and done superbly in my opinion by T.H. White: The Once and Future King; and in Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles), so where is there left to go?
Well, it’s just an idea at the moment, but my current thoughts lead me to a 21st century interpretation of the classic stories. It’s fair to say this may be controversial (even I think it’s controversial), but I do believe there is sufficient independence of this story such that it can stand alone, without quivering under the almighty shadow of those great Arthurian literary interpretations.
